Will You Foster?

Fostering Saves Lives

Fostering saves lives. It’s as simple as that.

We at St. Rocco Foundation are creating a FOSTER PORTAL to make it easier for you to be part of the solution to the crisis in this nation’s shelter system.

Each day, kill facilities (aka “shelters”) are destroying perfectly healthy, adoptable dogs alongside senior dogs or those who need medical attention. Allegedly, these facilities kill primarily for space; although many times they still have empty kennels.

The other reasons the “shelters” kill are more hidden: 1) The belief that a dog who does not have a home is better off dead than alive; and 2) breed discrimination. According to Save-a-Bull Rescue, “About 75% of municipal shelters euthanize pit bulls immediately upon intake, without them ever having any chance at adoption. Those that are offered for adoption are usually the first chosen for euthanasia when overcrowding forces the shelter’s hand and decisions have to be made. ” Out of 600 pit bull type dogs who enter kill facilities, only one will come out alive.

Due to constant, massive breeding – via puppy mills, basement breeders, and the like – the stream of dogs who arrive at kill facilities is practically endless. According to the ASPCA 670,000 dogs are euthanized each year – that’s almost 59,000 per month!

Until we can stop the cycle of breeding, overpopulation, and destruction of healthy animals through education and legislation, the best way to save shelter lives is through adoption or fostering.
